Healing in Plain Sight

I’ve come to realize that some of life’s greatest healing is hiding in plain sight.

Nature is one of life’s most accessible and overlooked sources of healing. Whether it’s the warmth of the sun on our skin, the sound of birds singing overhead or the simple act of tending a garden, the natural world has a remarkable way of bringing us back into balance. For me, some of life’s most meaningful moments happen outdoors, where I feel grounded, peaceful and connected.

Many of my favorite memories from the home-unschooling of my children’s years were rooted in nature. We spent countless hours outdoors—gardening, identifying herbs along woodland trails and exploring the wonders of the natural world together. Those experiences taught us that learning doesn’t always happen within four walls. Sometimes, the greatest lessons come from simply paying attention to the abundance of life all around us.

This time of year, our home is surrounded by beauty. Every evening we fall asleep to the soothing chorus of frogs and bullfrogs, and each morning brings new blooms, vibrant colors and fresh reminders that life is constantly renewing itself. These simple moments never fail to fill us with gratitude.

One discovery our family has especially enjoyed is the Merlin Bird ID app. During a recent visit from my daughter Cassidy, we used it to identify more than a dozen different bird species by their songs alone. What started as a fun activity quickly became a deeper appreciation for the rich variety of wildlife sharing our space. Suddenly, familiar sounds became individual voices, each with its own unique story.

We’ve also been busy tending the garden. Although we got a slightly later start than usual, there is always something rewarding about getting your hands in the soil and nurturing healthy plants. Gardening reminds us to slow down, be patient and work in harmony with nature’s rhythms.

I recently heard on a podcast that the benefits of natural light aren’t limited to standing directly in the sunshine. The speaker explained that simply opening a window and allowing natural light into a room can be beneficial. As light enters a space, it bounces, reflects and refracts off the surfaces around us, still reaching our bodies in meaningful ways. Even indirect light can help support our body’s natural rhythms, mood and sleep.

As you enjoy this month's issue, I encourage you to open the windows, take a walk, listen to the birds and soak in the beauty of the season. Nature is always offering us small gifts of peace, renewal and perspective. In a world that moves quickly, some of life’s greatest healing is often closer than we realize—hiding in plain sight, waiting only for us to notice.

Wishing you sunshine, birdsong and all of the simple healing gifts of summer,
